Narrow escape for 15 as NMMT bus catches fire; 9th incident in 3 years

MUMBAI: Fifteen passengers on an NMMT bus had a narrow escape after a fire broke out on board at Kharghar around noon on Wednesday, leaving the vehicle fully gutted. This is the ninth such fire incident on this model of NMMT buses in three years.
The fire broke out after the bus had pulled into its destination and commuters were alighting. As smoke billowed from the engine, the driver raised an alarm and the conductor got passengers to disembark quickly. The conductor used a fire extinguisher on board, but the flames spread quickly, said fire officer Pravin Bodake.
The buses which caught fire are among the fleet of 567 buses purchased from Ashok Leyland, said NMMT general manager, Yogesh Kaduskar. The transport body has sought a technical inspection by the bus manufacturer.
