Fire breaks out in Mercantile Building

Kanpur: A major fire broke out due to a short circuit in a warehouse located on the third floor of the Mercantile Building near Book Market in the Kotwali police station area late Monday night. Within minutes, the fire engulfed a major portion of the clothing warehouse on the fourth floor of the building. Workers engaged in Metro construction, who lived in empty rooms of the Mercantile Building, somehow escaped and saved their lives, however, four of theme suffered minor burns.
A total of 12 fire tenders reached the spot and controlled the fire after two and a half hours of hard exercise. The damage caused by the fire could not be estimated. The five-storey building, located behind Ursala Hospital, houses shops and warehouses on the ground floor of this commercial building near the Book Market.
Chief fire officer (CFO) Deepak Sharma said that 12 fire brigade vehicles, which reached the commercial building located near the Book Market, have brought the fire under control. “Investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fire is underway,” he added.
