Updated: 2024-04-03
Kanpur: Several thatched huts and shops caught fire after a major fire broke out in a scrap dump in Rakhi Mandi Afeem Kothi area under the limits of Raipurwa police station in the city on Tuesday morning.
People residing in the area were immediately evacuated from there.
The fire first broke out in a scrap dump and due to strong wind it soon spread to the adjoining huts and shops. On being informed, 15 fire tenders from various fire stations including Meerpur, Latouche road and Fazalganj, were pressed into service. Fire brigade personnel, local police and the local residents worked hard for several hours to extinguish the fire. The cause of fire is yet to be known. According the fire official, a good number of huts and shops exist in the Rakhi Mandi area and the people living there mostly do scrap work, due to which a huge quantity of scrap is always accumulated in the area. “Many huts and shops were hit by the fire. The fire spread due to plastic dumped in the scrap. The rescue operation lasted for several hours. We still have stationed many fire tenders at the spot. Efforts are on to assess loss. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported,” said chief fire officer Deepak Sharma.
