Director among 4 killed in blast at pharma plant in Telangana

Updated: 2024-04-04

HYDERABAD: A blast in a chemical reactor at a pharmaceutical company’s plant in Telangana’s Sangareddy district killed at least four persons, including the firm’s director, and left 16 others grievously injured on Wednesday evening.
According to fire officials, the blast occurred around 4.45pm, and triggered a massive fire at the factory of S B Organics Ltd, located at Chandapura village in Sangareddy, about 100 km from Hyderabad.

While one of the deceased was identified as the pharma company’s director D Ravi, the identity of three others was yet to be ascertained. The injured, all of whom have suffered third degree burns, have been admitted to different hospitals. At least five workers are said to be critical.
A case has been registered against the company at Hathnoora police station. Sangareddy SP Ch Rupesh said the victims were employees of the company, working at different levels.
A police officer said overheating of the reactor and the defunct sensors were suspected to have caused the explosion, but a joint probe by police and fire departments had begun to ascertain the exact cause.
The fire department received a call around 5 pm, following which five fire tenders were rushed to the site.
“While we managed to contain the fire from spreading out of the factory, some casualties had already occurred by then. It took over three hours to bring the situation under control,” said V Srinivas, district fire officer. Officials said there were 20 people at the factory at the time of the incident, and dismissed reports about more employees being trapped inside the premises. Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy, former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao and other leaders expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
