Massive fire engulfs Chhattisgarh Power Distribution Company Limited Area Store in state capital Raipur

Updated: 2024-04-05

RAIPUR: A massive fire broke out at the storage area of the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL) in the crowded Gudhiyari area beside the railway station in the state capital Raipur on Friday afternoon, prompting firefighters to swing into action. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The blaze rapidly spread across approximately one and a half acres of land, engaging over a dozen fire brigade vehicles in combatting the fire.

Reports indicate that the fire originated from a short circuit within a transformer. Continuous blasts can be heard emanating from the site, indicating the severity of the situation. The premises house a substantial number of transformers, exacerbating the challenge for firefighters.
As smoke billows into the city’s skyline, an atmosphere of chaos grips the surrounding area. Senior officials, including Secretary to the Chief Minister P Dayanand, Collector Dr Gaurav Singh, and Senior Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh, rushed to the scene to assess the situation.
Despite ongoing efforts, the fire remains uncontained. Authorities are coordinating evacuation procedures to ensure the safety of those living near the incident site.

Meanwhile, R K Shukla, Managing Director of CSPDCL and Chhattisgarh Power Transmission Company Limited informed TOI on Friday evening that the fire was under control as more fire brigades continued to arrive.
Around 25 transformers, including two to three power transformers, cables, and other equipment, were gutted in the fire. “We cannot estimate the cost of the goods that were gutted in the fire. We can only assess the damage and disclose the same on Saturday. There are residential colonies surrounding the storage area. The residents were asked to evacuate as a precautionary measure. However, no damage was done to the lives and properties of the residents. The reason behind the fire could not be ascertained,” he said.
