Massive fire breaks out at dump yard
Updated: 2024-04-07
Coimbatore: A massive fire broke out at Vellalore dump yard on Saturday evening. The fire erupted adjacent to the Rapid Action Force (RAF) campus, causing alarm. Thick smoke enveloped Ramanathapuram and parts of Sundarapuram, Chettipalayam and Kurichi.
The cause of fire is being investigated. The amount of legacy waste gutted also yet to be ascertained. However, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran said excessive heat might have resulted in methane generation, causing fire.
As many as 35 firemen and more than 100 corporation workers have been deployed to douse the fire. At least 11 fire tenders from Coimbatore and two each from Erode and Tirupur corporations have been deployed, along with more than 10 water tankers, for the operation. Heavy vehicles have also been deployed to clear garbage piles. In addition, two drones have been pressed into service to monitor the intensity of fire and its spread.
The commissioner sai heavy wind was causing the fire to spread quickly. He, however, said the best possible measures were being taken to control further spread.
District collector Kranthi Kumar Pati inspected the spot and assured to bring the fire under control by Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, K S Mohan, secretary, Kurichi-Vellalore Pollution Prevention Action Committee, blamed the lack of preventive measures by the corporation for the situation. “Fire in the yard is quite common during summer. The impact of a massive fire like this one is huge, with toxic pollutants spreading to more than 3km radious. The corporation should have ensured water tankers and fire engines at the yard round-the-clock, especially during summer.” He said huge piles of waste were adding to the challenge by making it difficult for fire engines to navigate. “If the waste had been segmented, it would have been feasible to contain the flames and limit its spread,” he said.
