Fire destroys at least 100 scrap shops in Chikhali

Updated: 2024-04-07

Pune: About 100 shops of scraps at Kudalwadi and Jadhavwadi in Chikhali were gutted in a fire that broke out around 1.30 am on Saturday.

No one was injured in the incident, the Pimpri Chinchwad fire department said. But, the fire caused panic among the local residents and it spread till 9am. All the shops were made up of tin sheets. Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade pressed 12 fire tenders, and 16 water tankers to extinguish the fire. Hrishikesh Chipade, Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade officer, told TOI, “We managed to control the fire around 9.30 am, and then the cooling procedure continued till afternoon.”

“There can be multiple reasons for the fire and we are investigating how and from where it broke out,” Chipade said.

According to a fire brigade official, these shops and scrap yards are spread in an area of about two acres. They collect discarded materials such as tyres, spray cans (perfume, colours and other inflammable gases), plastic, wooden material and others. These units generally work in the night hours to pull out metal from plastic, tyres, and cans by executing a controlled fire mechanism.

“It is suspected that the fire broke from a unit while burning some of the material,” the official said. According to another official, the spray cans which have inflammable gases, caught fire and they were flung into the air.

“Some workers of these shops tried their best to quell the fire at initial stage and called up fire brigade at 1.38 am when their efforts proved futile,” the officer said.

In the fire, the machinery, the scrap, wooden furniture, and other materials were stored in the scrap shops or yards, the fire brigade official said.
