New Delhi: Panic swept through the lanes of GB Road in central Delhi after a massive fire engulfed a building on Monday night. Cops evacuated over 50 people, including three children, from the adjoining houses as the flames began to spread. There were no casualties or injuries. Police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the blaze.
Fire officials said they received a call about the blaze around 11 pm. “Fourteen fire tenders were rushed to the spot to extinguish the blaze, which had erupted on two floors of the building. The fire was brought under control in one hour,” said a senior official.
A local police team had also joined the rescue operation. “The blaze had spread to at least four buildings, where several people, including children, were trapped. They were successfully evacuated by the team. A pregnant woman was among those rescued. She was immediately shifted to a hospital for medical examination,” said a police officer.
In a footage of the incident that has gone viral, a building can be seen engulfed in thick flames, triggering chaos in the locality. Affected people, including some brothel workers, have been shifted to other accommodations, said the officer.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. “A crime and forensics team inspected the location while further investigation remains under way,” the officer added.
