Updated: 2024-04-11

Mohali: A major fire broke out at Bhago Majra slum here on Wednesday. As per the reports, around 40 huts were reduced to ashes, leaving approximately 160 persons homeless.

However, in a major relief, no casualty has been reported. The cause of the blaze is it is suspected to be either a cooking accident or a short circuit. According to the fire officials, the Kharar fire department received a call at 10am. On reaching the spot, the first fire tender realised that the level of the fire had intensified, therefore, they called up more reinforcement, officials added.

A fire officer said a total of five fire tenders — two from Kharar and three from Mohali — were pressed into action. It took around 4 hours to douse the flames. The fire tenders returned to their respective fire station by 2pm. Sources in the fire department stated that it had been in the report that the cause of fire was unknown, but it was suspected to be cooking accident or short circuit due to illegal power connection.

Later in the day, SDM Mohali Deepankar Garg visited the shanties gutted in fire at Bhago Majra (Landra Road). The administration arranged food and temporary accommodation to the homeless at the nearby religious place.

He said as a temporary measure, accommodation has been arranged at a nearby religious place where food would also be provided to the homeless. He added that other than damage of household goods, no casualty was reported in the incident.
