New Delhi: A 72-year-old woman died after a fire broke out in a house at Shahdara district’s Gandhi Nagar on Friday.
Police received a call regarding a fire in Raghbarpura around 3 am. The fire started on the first floor of a three-storey building, which also housed shops on the ground level, police said.
An elderly couple, Krishna Mishra (76) and his wife Saroj Mishra (72), were asleep when fire broke out near an ‘akhand jyoti’ around 2.40 am, a police officer said, adding, “While Krishna managed to escape by heading towards the stairs, his wife ran to the bathroom and got trapped due to the intensity of the fire”.
Ten fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. During the search, the firefighters found the woman’s body in the washroom, police said.
Officials determined that she succumbed to suffocation and ruled out any suspicion of foul play. Inquest proceedings have been initiated under section 174 of the CrPC. tnn
