Lucknow: Two 18-year-old girls and a 30-year-old woman narrowly escaped a fire that broke out in a high-rise apartment in the city’s Thakurganj area on Thursday evening. However, household items worth lakhs were destroyed in the blaze.
The fire broke out in flat number 302 on the third floor, belonging to Heena. Heavy smoke engulfed the entire building, trapping a woman and two girls on other floors. The trapped residents were Shivani (18), Harshita (18), and Zeba Hasan (32).
“The intense fire caused heavy smoke throughout the building, creating significant challenges,” said chief fire officer Mangesh Kumar, who was present at the scene. “However, we successfully evacuated everyone to the terrace, a safe location, before extinguishing the fire.”
The fire department suspects the fire originated from an electrical spark in Heena’s air conditioner, which escalated quickly. Upon receiving the emergency call, fire brigade vehicles and equipment from Chowk fire station, Bakshi Ka Talab, and Hazratganj fire station were dispatched to the scene.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus sets reached the third floor and began extinguishing the flames,” said CFO Kumar. “Once partially controlled, two firefighters accessed the burning room from an adjacent balcony and doused the fire from both sides. It took approximately an hour to bring the blaze under control.”
Fire station officer, Chowk, Pushpendra Kumar, said that the apartment building lacked a fire safety certificate (NOC). He also noted the limited number of fire safety equipment installed in the building. “We will be issuing a notice to the owner and requesting a response regarding these safety concerns,” he said. FSO Kumar further said firefighter Ramesh, equipped with breathing apparatus, entered the apartment and rescued Zeba from the fifth floor, followed by the two girls on other floors. Firefighters from outside simultaneously began spraying water to contain the flames.
