Goods worth ₹5 crore gutted in warehouse fire

Vijayawada: A major fire incident engulfed a medical logistics warehouse at Governorpet area in the city on Thursday. The blaze, that started around 5:30 am, caused loss ofgoods estimated 5 crore.
According to Governorpet police, a short circuit is suspected to initiate the fire mishap. Locals spotted smoke billowing from the first floor of the warehouse and immediately alerted the fire department. Soon, the fire spread to all the three floors of the building. The situation exacerbated after the stock of a nearby clothing store also caught fire. A team of 40 fire fighters with advanced equipments arrived at the spot within the next ten minutes and doused the flame.
Meanwhile, widespread smoke and fumes from the incident led to breathing difficulties among local residents. For precautionary measures in order to avoid the suffocating smoke, shops at Besant Road were kept closed till afternoon that day.
District fire officer A V Shankar Rao said, “The building was a 600 sq metre G plus three structure opposite to the Tagore library on MG Road. The fire was intense and the smoke from the burning medicines posed a challenge for the firefighters.”
Police confirmed that there were no fatalities in the incident. Following the mishap, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) fire wing is now emphasising on installation of fire safety equipments in all commercial buildings.
