New Delhi: Panic ensued ata govt school in west Delhi’s Nihal Vihar following a fireon Wednesday. The schoolauthorities promptly evacuated all students and no injury was reported.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire originated in a temporary storeroom on the school premises. According to sources, the room was built a few metres from the main building, and several items, such as furniture and old books — all highly combustible — were kept there. The main school building didn’t catch fire, they added.
Fire department received a call at 10.14am and three fire tenders were sent immediately to the spot. By 10.40am, fire officials confirmed that the fire had been doused.
The CCTV footage capturing the fire showed a dense plume of smoke emanating from the building. A few people were also seen trying to douse the flame using fire extinguishers and water. According to firefighters, everything kept in the temporary storeroom got charred.
“The school was in session at the time of the incident and the students had exited the building as soon as they were alerted about the fire. Their parents also reached the spot. There was a panic situation, but it was brought under control,” said a firefighter. “The storeroom was away from the main building where classes were on. No one was injured,” he added.
Police suspect that a short-circuit might have triggered the fire. “We will get to identify the reason after a proper investigation,” an officer said.
Earlier this month, six buses had caught fire at school in Dwarka. It spread to two rooms on the ground floor, but no casualty was reported.
