Updated: 2024-05-04
Gurgaon: A fire broke out in Saraswati Kunj in Sector 53 on Friday morning, leaving over 240 shanties gutted. No casualties have been reported.
According to the police , the fire was caused due to a leakage in an LPG gas cylinder. The fire department received a distress call around 10.40am on Friday, following which nine fire tenders rushed to the spot.
After the gas cylinder allegedly caught fire, the blaze quickly spread through the densely packed jhuggis, which were primarily inhabited by migrant workers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as residents managed to evacuate the area in time.
It took around five hours for the nine fire tenders to douse the flames and the extent of the damage was significant, with most shanties reducing to ashes. Residents lost their belongings in the fire, including cash, clothes and documents.
Razak, a resident who lost his house in the fire, said, “We not only lost the roof over our head, but also our belongings and cash. We are not even left with utensils and clothes for surviving.”
Local authorities and NGOs have stepped in to provide immediate relief and assistance to the affected families. Temporary shelter arrangements are being made and essential supplies such as food, water, and clothing are being distributed.
