GUWAHATI: A fire broke out at Bijulee Bhawan in the Paltan Bazar area during the afternoon hours on Friday. Following this, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered an immediate inquiry to ascertain the cause of the fire and instructed a safety audit of the building.
The fire started around 3.45 pm and spread from the second floor of the building. Around 15 fire tenders and a hydraulic crane were pressed into service and the power supply to the premises was immediately cut off to prevent further escalation.
Paltan Bazar fire department inspector Lutfar Dewan said, “The fire broke out inside a store room on the second floor of the building. We suspect that it might have been due to a faulty electrical connection. It left a portion of the building completely charred.”
The inspector added that the fire resulted in damage to items valued at Rs 10 lakh and also caused the destruction of several important documents. “Items like tiles and old furniture were damaged. There was also indirect damage as we had to break the glasses to allow water passage,” the inspector said. However, no casualties were reported.
