VIRUDHUNAGAR: Eight workers, including five women, died and 11 others sustained injuries in a blast in a fireworks manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Thursday.
The accident happened in Sri Sudharshan Fireworks in Sengamalapatti village near Sivakasi. There are more than 40 working sheds in the unit owned by Saravanan.
On Thursday afternoon, when the employees were manufacturing fancy variety crackers in a working shed, a blast was triggered due to friction. Fire spread to nearby working sheds.
On being alerted, fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and put out the blaze.
The injured were admitted to Sivakasi Government Hospital.
In a statement, the chief minister M K Stalin said that he was saddened by the deaths of eight workers in the blast. He stated that he had instructed the district collector to carry out necessary rescue operations and ensure that proper treatment is provided to the injured. Stalin said the government’s relief measures would be provided to the family members of the deceased people after obtaining permission from the Election Commission as the model code of conduct is in force.
