SCDF puts out fire at terraced house near Katong Shopping Centre; no one hurt
Updated: 2024-05-14
SINGAPORE – Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) firefighters put out a fire that broke out at a terraced house near Katong Shopping Centre on May 13.
In a Facebook post at about 2.20pm, SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at 25 Mugliston Road at about 11.35am.
The firefighters used water jets on the front and back of the affected house, as well as on three houses next to it. Seven water jets were used at the height of the operation, said SCDF.
No one was hurt. The occupants of the affected house and the neighbouring houses evacuated before SCDF’s arrival.
Although the fire was largely contained, two houses next to the affected unit were also damaged.
After the blaze was put out, SCDF said, the firefighters carried out damping-down operations to ensure that “deep-seated embers are fully extinguished to prevent any rekindling of the fire”. The process involves applying more water to wet surfaces that have been burnt immediately after a fire has been put out.
In a statement issued early on May 14, a spokesperson for the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said engineers had inspected the affected house.

They found that the terraced house at 25 Mugliston Road had damage to its reinforced concrete structures and timber roof structures, while the houses at 23 and 27 Mugliston Road had their roofs damaged.
The spokesperson said BCA will issue a Dangerous Building Order and a Closure Order to the owners of the three houses, which will require them to appoint professional engineers to “conduct a detailed investigation and recommend permanent rectifications to be carried out”.
In the meantime, the affected areas have been cordoned off, while only the first storeys of the houses at 23 and 27 Mugliston Road are safe for occupation, said the spokesperson.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
