Fire at Pallavaram godown; close shave for 20
Updated: 2024-07-10
Chennai: Twenty guest workers narrowly escaped a fire that broke out at a plastic godown in Pallavaram on Monday night.
The fire erupted at 11.30pm while the workers were sleeping inside the godown, which was owned by Jayaraj and Suresh of Thiruneermalai, where they were recycling goods.
As the flames began to spread, the workers initially tried to extinguish the fire using the water available in the godown. Neighbours noticed the smoke and promptly alerted fire and rescue services. The workers managed to escape and alert the fire personnel before the situation worsened.
Nine fire tenders from Guindy, Saidapet, Teynampet, Ashok Nagar, and Medavakkam rushed to the scene, battling the blaze for nearly two hours. The intense smoke engulfed the entire area, causing eye irritation to the residents.
Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit in the junction box located inside the motor room sparked the fire. The Shankar Nagar police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations.
