S Railway godown goes up in flames
Updated: 2024-07-12
Chennai: At least 10 people, including a few firefighters, suffered minor bruises when a portion of the wall collapsed while they were putting out a fire at a Southern Railway department godown in Perambur on Thursday. Police said they were treated by doctors at the accident spot and no complaint was lodged.
The fire was caused by an electrical short circuit at the telecommunications godown, where railway officials stored signal equipment, PVC pipes, and other materials. Fire personnel, led by station fire officer Ramesh, reached the accident site soon after the control room received the distress call around 8am. As the fire spread further, fire tenders from ICF, Kolathur, Vyasarpadi, Sembium, and Washermenpet were pressed into service.
As fire and thick smoke emanating from the accident spot rose to more than 1,000 metres, many residents complained of suffocation. Firefighters fought for more than three hours to put it out.
