Fire in Gorakhpur-bound train near Mumbai; passengers safe
Updated: 2024-07-15
NEW DELHI: A coach of the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Gorakhpur Express caught fire near its wheels due to brake binding in Thane district near Mumbai on Monday morning.
The blaze was quickly extinguished, and all passengers were safe, according to railway officials.
The Gorakhpur-bound train encountered trouble near Thakurli station around 6:30 am due to brake binding in the S-8 coach, a Central Railway (CR) spokesperson said.
In the brake binding process, train brakes get jammed with wheels, which can emit heavy smoke and sometimes lead to a fire because of excess heat.
Thakurli station is approximately 35 km from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai. Some passengers panicked upon seeing the heavy smoke emanating from the wheels and alerted the railway staff on board, according to sources.
“It was a very small blaze and was immediately doused using two fire extinguishers,” the CR spokesperson said.
The train resumed its journey within 20 minutes, the official added. The train had initially departed 26 minutes late from its origin station, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, at 5:49 am, as per sources.
