Kanpur: Property and goods worth several lakh was gutted after a major fire broke out in a tannery in Jajmau on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. Six fire tenders were pressed into service to control the blaze which was doused after about ten hours of efforts.
The tannery situated near 150 feet road is owned by Javed Iqbal, a resident of Defence Colony, Jajmau.
Police station in-charge Ajay Prakash said the fire broke out late at night in the upper section of the tannery and gradually it engulfed a major area of the tannery. The tannery workers first tried to extinguish the fire by themselves but seeing its formidable form, they rushed out of the tannery and raised an alarm. Then they informed the tannery owner, the police and the fire brigade.
On getting information, ten fire tenders from Meerpur Cantt and Jajmau fire stations reached the spot. The fire brigade personnel brought the blaze under control after about ten hours of hard work. However, a portion of the roof became weak due to the fire and its plaster fell on the fireman Salman Ali leaving him injured.
The police later admitted him to a nearby private hospital for treatment.
Rahul Nandan, fire officer of Jajmau fire station, said that the fire was caused by a short circuit.“A fireman was injured while extinguishing the blaze. No loss of life however was reported,” he said, “Losses in the tannery are being assessed,” he added.
