Fire breaks out at E Delhi cafe, one rescued

Updated: 2024-07-16

New Delhi: A 50-year-old man was rescued after a fire allegedly broke out at a cafe in east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar on Sunday night.

On Sunday, at around 9:30 pm, shopkeepers closed their shops and went home. After 2 hours, they received information that a fire had broken out in their shops. The fire had engulfed Cafe Yank and a building with multiple shops. Twenty-five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Delhi Fire Services (DFS) were able to extinguish the fire after more than 14 hours.

DFS authorities said that the fire started from the ground floor and then spread to the first and second floors. The cause of the fire seems to be an electrical short circuit, further aggravated by the lack of ventilation in all the shops, they added.

Firefighters at the spot told TOI, “The major challenge we faced in extinguishing the fire was that since all the shops were so close to one another with virtually no open exit or entry point, we found it very hard to enter the premises in the first place.”

“The heat was so intense that even though we were wearing our personal protective equipment, we could barely tolerate it. A fireman also got injured, ” they said adding that two LPG cylinders were found on the top floor, luckily, the heat didn’t reach them.
