Updated: 2024-08-09
Kolhapur: A major fire broke out at the historic Keshavrao Bhosale Natyagruha around 9.45pm on Thursday. The theatre built in 1915 by Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj suffered heavy damage.
The KMC-run natyagruha is named after legendary theatre artist Keshavrao Bhosale, and incidentally, it was gutted on the eve of Bhosale’s 134 birth anniversary. The flames even engulfed the shelter of the Shahu Khasbaug maidan.
The theatre was renovated in 2015 on the occasion of 100 years of its foundation. “All seven fire tenders have been deployed with all fire department personnel to control the massive blaze. As per preliminary information, the air condition unit of the theatre caught fire. What sparked the fire is yet to be ascertained,” said Mohan Suryawanshi, the public relations officer (PRO) of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation.
