Man charred to death as fire breaks out at home in Gurgaon
Updated: 2024-08-17
GURGAON: A 35-year-old man was charred to death when a fire broke out at his house in Shree Ram Enclave on Maruti Kunj Road on Friday.
Sanjay, a nurse at a private hospital, was alone at home when the fire occurred. His wife and child had gone to her parents’ house. Police suspect the fire was caused by a short circuit.
Bhondsi inspector Naresh Kumar said, “The fire emanated in the first-floor room of the house where Sanjay was asleep. No other part of the house was damaged.”
Officials from Sohna fire station said they received an alert around 1am. Locals at Shree Ram Enclave noticed smoke and fire from the house.
After there was no response from inside the house, a neighbour started a submersible pump to stop the fire from spreading.
“Our fire tender reached there and quickly put out the fire. A person, who was alone at home, died in the fire. The charred body of the victim was on the RC cement bed. The mattress and bed sheet caught fire, and the cupboards and electronic items were partially damaged due to smoke. The ground floor flat, rented to an old lady, was not damaged,” fire department official Devender said.
“There is a switchboard right next to the bed. It appears like the mattress caught fire due to a short circuit. It is possible that the victim was in a deep sleep and died due to inhalation of smoke. We have sent the body of the victim for postmortem to find out the cause of death. In their statements, family members did not raise any suspicions about Sanjay’s death. We will initiate proceedings as per BNS Section 194 and hand over the body to the family after the autopsy,” the inspector said.
In another fire incident on Aug 10, Kasturi (70), who ran a tea shop and stayed alone in her shop at Sohna wholesale grain market, was burnt alive when the gas cylinder at the tea stall caught fire in the night..
