Fire breaks out in Kilpauk hosp operation theatre
Updated: 2024-08-18
Chennai: A fire broke out inside an operation theatre in Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) and hospital on Saturday. Police said no one was injured in the accident and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
According to police, the fire broke out around 2.10pm on the second floor of a six-storey block, when hospital staff was cleaning and fogging the operation theatre. Staff said they heard a loud noise and soon saw thick smoke emanating from an air conditioning unit. They left the room and informed the hospital dean. On being alerted, two fire tenders rushed to the scene and put out the fire.
Fire personnel suspect the the blaze to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit in a faulty air conditioning unit or other electrical equipment. “There were patients on the sixth floor. We moved them to safety after the fire broke out,” a policeman said.
Hospital authorities said no surgeries were carried out in the operation theatre on Saturday as it was “maintenance day”.
“No casualties were reported. There are no wards or patients on the floor,” said KMC dean Dr P K Baskar. “Officials told us they don’t yet know the cause of the fire,” he said.
Last week, health minister Ma Subramanian visited the newly constructed block at the hospital. The building is likely to be inaugurated by the end of the month.
