Four-storey PG in crowded locality on fire, 70 rescued

Noida: More than 70 people, most of them women, were evacuated after a fire ripped through a four-storey paying guest accommodation at a crowded locality in Sector 62 on Monday morning. With the roads leading to the building too narrow, firefighters used long hose pipes to douse the flames.
Dramatic footage filmed by neighbours showed thick black smoke and fire billowing from the building as people can be heard screaming frantically for help. Videos were shared on several social media platforms.
Chief fire officer Pradeep Chaubey said the fire broke out around 8am on the ground floor of the building in the Rasoolpur Nawada area of Sector 62 and spread to the floors above it rapidly.
Five fire engines were rushed to the spot, but the trucks had to stop at a distance and long hose pipe adjustments had to be used to carry water to the building.
“As the fire engulfed the ground floor and started to spread, people living on the upper floors rushed to the terrace. They could be evacuated only after the blaze was doused completely after nearly 30 minutes. The residents were brought down one by one using a ladder,” Chaubey said.
While most furniture was charred, no causalities or injuries were reported, the officer said.
Investigations later indicated that the fire was sparked by a short circuit in an electrical panel on the ground floor. The short-circuit caused an advertising board outside the building to catch fire, which quickly spread to the two floors above, fire officials said.
