A child among three family members burnt in Dhaka gas fire

A child is among the three members of a family who have suffered burn injuries in a fire caused by a gas leak in Dhaka’s Shukrabad.
The injured have been identified as Totan Mia, 35, his wife Nipa Begum, 30, and the couple’s three-year-old son Md Bayzid.
The incident occurred around 3:30am on Saturday.
The three have been admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery with burn injuries.
Totan’s brother-in-law Nazrul Islam and uncle Zakir Hossain, who took them to the institute, said there had been a leakage in the gas pipeline at the family’s flat over the past few days.
The flames engulfed the apartment when a matchstick was lit up for the stove.
Md Tariqul Islam, resident physician at the burn institute, says Totan suffered burns on 50 percent of his body, Nipa on 32 percent and Bayzid on 45 percent. Their condition is critical, he said.
Totan, a raw material trader, hailed from Kishoreganj’s Nikli Upazila. He has been living with his family at a rented house in the capital’s Shukrabad.
Another fire incident had occurred in the same apartment a year ago, Nazrul said.
