Caretaker dies in blaze at firecracker warehouse

Updated: 2024-09-04

New Delhi: A man died in a blaze that engulfed a firecracker warehouse in northeast Delhi’s Sonia Vihar on Monday. The deceased has been identified as the caretaker of the warehouse.

Police said that they received a call regarding the incident at 4.10 am and five fire tenders were immediately sent to the spot. A team comprising fire officer Anup Kumar and 30 firemen brought the situation under control by 6 am.

A police officer said that the man was sleeping when the fire broke out and he suffered 100% burn injuries. The body was found inside the warehouse in a badly burnt condition. It was later sent for postmortem.

“Krishan, a resident of Sabhapur village, is the owner of the 200 square yard plot on which a one-room set and a tin shed had been built. He had rented the premises to Javed, a resident of Wazirabad, who used the premises to store firecrackers. The accused has been absconding since the incident. The deceased caretaker has not been identified yet,” DCP (North East) Joy Tirkey said.

It also suspected that the godown was running illegally. Efforts are being made to apprehend Javed, he added.

It was yet to be ascertained whether the fire broke out on its own. A case has been registered at the Sonia Vihar police station and further investigation is underway.

On Saturday, a fire broke out at a flat in a multi-storey apartment in west Delhi’s Vikaspuri. No one was injured in the incident but the household items were gutted, officials said.
