Two children killed in fire; parents critically injured

Chennai: Two children, aged two years and one year, died in a fire that engulfed a three-storied building at Tiruttani on Thursday night. The parents of the children also suffered burn injuries and are battling for their lives in a hospital.
Police said Prem Kumar, 32, his wife Manjula, 31, and their two sons — Mithulan (2) and Nakulan (1) — reside on the second floor of a residential house, while its owner Mahendran occupies the ground floor. The couple had come to the locality a year ago.
Police said the fire originated from a junction box on the ground floor in the middle of the night and quickly spread to the motorcycles parked nearby. Residents on the ground floor noticed the fire and evacuated their homes. However, before they could alert the tenants on the second floor, who were fast asleep, the fire had already reached Prem Kumar’s house.
The family initially struggled to get out of their home as dense smoke started to engulf the room and the blaze spread to electrical wires, further complicating the situation. Though they managed to find way out and began to descend on the stairs, their cloths caught fire.
“They struggled to make their way down the staircase due to the hot, tiled flooring”, said Tiruttani DSP Kandan.
On information, fire services personnel rushed to the spot and put out the fire. All the four were given first aid and shifted to Tiruvallur govt hospital. Later, they were shifted to Govt Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. Mithulan and Nakulan, who had suffered more than 90% burns, succumbed to their injuries.
