Updated: 2024-10-03

KOTA: The fire, caused by sparks from neem leaves burnt as a mosquito repellent, broke out late Wednesday night at a Gurukul run by an organisation in Talwas village under Dei police station in Bundi district. As a result, three children studying there sustained burn injuries. The three boys, aged 12-13 years, were initially taken to a hospital in Nainwa, then to Bundi district hospital in critical condition, and later on Thursday morning, they were referred to Kota.

The Gurukul, run by an organisation in Talwas village, 55 km from Bundi district headquarters, is claimed to be of its specific kind where pupils are imparted education through Vedic System.
Two of the boys were reportedly in critical condition.
According to SHO, Dei police station, Babulal, the children earlier in the evening burnt neem tree dry leaves as a mosquito repellent in a corner of the hall where 14 boys were sleeping on foam mattresses.
The leftover sparks from the ash, later at night, with the air from a fan and cooler, spiralled over the foam mattresses, causing the fire to break out, he said. Three boys sustained around 60% burn injuries in the fire, the SHO said, who was on the spot on Thursday morning.
The injured boys were identified as 13-year-old Ritesh Sharma, son of Lokesh Sharma from Nahar ka Chohatta, Bundi; 13-year-old Shivshankar Sharma, son of Manoj Sharma from Moikalan, Baran district; and 12-year-old Abhijeet Sharma, son of Sanwara from Bamboli village, Nainwan.
Gurukul teacher Suresh Sharma told the media that he had taken a class of 14 children until 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night. After that, 10 children slept in the large hall, and 4 slept outside. A fan and cooler were running in the hall.
He said that upon hearing the children’s screams, he rushed and immediately rescued them from the fire. However, by then, three children had already sustained injuries.
