Updated: 2014-06-04-10:10
A fire that broke out in the south-east block of Parliament building has been quickly controlled.
No casualties have been reported.
The fire erupted on the third floor of the block around 8:30am on Wednesday, fire service official Shazadi Sultana said.
Four fire fighting units rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control around 8:50am, she told bdnews24.com.
Fire fighters are yet to confirm the cause of the fire.
Ashraful Haque, Sergeant-at-Arms at Parliament Secretariat said the fire started in the room of the personal secretary of Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed.
He suspects an electric short-circuit might have sparked it.
bdnews24.com correspondent Sajidul Haque reported from the scene all papers and furniture of the room were damaged in the fire.
The fire spread to a room on top of the personal secretary’s room.
The Opposition leader’s office is located beneath the Commerce Minister’s room.
Security personnel said the entire parliament building was engulfed in smoke.
Many waited outside in panic.
Power connection was cut off right after the fire.
The connection was restored to the whole building except the south-east block after the flames were doused.
Ziaul Ahsan, an engineer at the public works division of Parliament Secretariat, said fire fighters broke open the door of the room where fire started and brought it under control.
The second session of the 10th parliament began on Tuesday. Finance Minister AMA Muhith will present budget for 2014-15 fiscal on Thursday.
