Multiple buildings damaged in fire in Namakkal, loss pegged at over 1 crore

Namakkal: A major fire broke out at a supermarket at Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district on Thursday morning. The fire also spread to an automobile shop and a financial firm located near the supermarket. Goods and property worth 1 crore were destroyed in the blaze.
Police said the fire broke out a supermarket run by V Sakthivel at Kumarapalayam. The store was locked after work hours around 11pm on Wednesday. Around 3.30 am, thick smoke suddenly began billowing from the back of the supermarket. By the time Sakthivel was alerted, the fire had already begun to spread throughout the store. He alerted the fire department and firefighters from Kumarapalayam station responded promptly. The fire was extinguished after a three-hour long battle. “It is likely that the fire was caused by an electrical issue,” said a firefighter.
Grocery items worth around 40 lakh stored in the supermarket were destroyed in the fire. Vehicle parts and accessories worth about 70 lakh were destroyed at automobile shop. The financial firm’s building also sustained partial fire damage.
Veppadai police said the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. A case has been registered, and further probe is on.
