Early morning fire razes 6 San Mateo, Rizal establishments
Updated: 2014-06-11-05:59

(Updated 10:15 a.m.) At least six residential-commercial establishments were razed in a fire that hit Barangay Dulongbayan in San Mateo, Rizal province early Wednesday morning.

No one was initially injured in the fire, but four families were forced to flee their homes, radio dzBB’s Manny Vargas reported.

The fire occurred along General Luna Street, according to a separate report on GMA News TV’s News to Go.

A video posted by dzBB’s Vargas showed one of the establishments burning.

San Mateo OIC fire marshal SFO3 Braulio Villanueva said the fire started about 2 a.m. and razed an eatery, a pizza parlor, a sari-sari store and a computer shop.

Villanueva also said they had a hard time fighting the fire because many residents tried to grab their hoses to save their own houses.

However, some residents were quoted in the News to Go report as saying the firefighters arrived late.

The fire reached the second alarm and was put out at 2:45 a.m.

But even after the fire was put out, firefighters played safe and hosed down liquefied petroleum gas tanks in the area to make sure they do not explode.

Arson investigators are verifying some residents’ claims that the fire started after a Manila Electric Co. maintenance team finished working on an electric post in the area. — Joel Locsin/DVM/KG, GMA News
