Firefighters and police evacuate a body bag containing a victim of a fire that swept through homes in the densely populated area in Jembatan Besi subdistrict, Tambora, West Jakarta, on Tuesday. Thirty eight fire engines were deployed to extinguish the fire that killed one person. (Antara/Zabur Karuru)A fire swept through homes in the residential area of Jembatan Besi just behind the Season’s City mall and apartments in Tambora, West Jakarta on Tuesday morning. The fire, which began around 8 a.m. in the crowded residential area with two schools in close proximity was still burning over two hours later. All the students, teachers and staff in the school closest to the fire were evacuated.
Firefighters, who arrived on the scene within an hour, scrambled to find water sources to contain the blaze, which moved rapidly from north to south and more slowly began to spread toward the west in the direction of a school and the mall.
As the fire spread from house to house, explosions and panicked shouting from residents were heard. Thick black smoke rose up, enveloping wide areas of the kampung, forcing apartment dwellers as high up as the 11th floor to close their windows. As of 10:30 a.m., firefighters had yet to bring the blaze under control
