Couple set house ablaze‚ then kill themselves

PYUTHAN: A couple set their house on fire before committing suicide at Kolampa of Sarai VDC-3 in Pyuthan today.
District Police Office said that Shivram Raut, 56, and his wife Chuuma Raut, 50, set their house ablaze before committing suicide by hanging themselves. DSP Dipak Regmi said, “A probe into the incident is underway.”
The fire caused only partial damage to the house as neighbours had doused the fire early.
According to Suraj BK, the couple’s neighbour, Chuuma had been mentally ill for the past few years and Shivram used to quarrel with his wife almost everyday after coming home in an inebriated state. “When we entered the house, we saw them hanging,” BK said.
Maite Raut, the couple’s only son, works in India. The deceased couple wereen living with Maite’s wife and their son. She said she had gone to drop her son to school when the incident occurred.
They were fighting abject poverty. Their bodies have been sent to District Public Health Office for autopsy.
