Family loses both children in blaze

NEW DELHI: A couple in West Patel Nagar lost both their children to a fire on Friday evening. Neha (4) and Akanksha (11 months) were on the fourth floor of a private property.

Locals said a stray rocket that landed in the room caused the blaze but the fire department said it was sparked by a short circuit.

The owner lives abroad and the property, 3/16, West Patel Nagar, is used as a family retreat and, on occasion, as a non-commercial guest house for relatives, police said.

The children belonged to Balaram and his wife who have been staying there as caretakers. The family occupied a single, tin-roofed room on the terrace.

The couple had put the children to sleep about 7 pm and gone downstairs to take care of chores. They discovered the entire floor up in flames when they returned upstairs to give them dinner. Both the children had been charred to death. “The children were killed on the spot,” a police officer said.

The fire was reported at 7.40 pm and the fire department sent out three fire tenders. People of the locality complained that it was a stray rocket – left over from someone’s stash of Diwali crackers – that landed in the room and started the fire. But the department denies it and are blaming the tragedy on a short circuit.
