Fire engulfed the Moriah Orphanage in Lebong Gajah subdistrict in Palembang, South Sumatra at dawn on Saturday, killing four people who lived in the building.
According to neighbors, the blaze started in the middle of the night and was only extinguished at around 4 a.m. Tamam Suryaman, 46, one of the orphanage’s caretakers, said he did not know what the source of fire was, but added that it had grown bigger in the living room as residents tried to escape.
“We eventually broke the windows because the door was locked and we panicked,” he said on Sunday, adding that the orphanage was home to some 15 people.
The four victims who died in the fire were orphanage head Salma, 60, Apri, 10, Akhmad Zandin, 18, and Razid, 4.
Palembang Fire Fighting and Disaster Management Agency head Edison said five fire-fighting vehicles were deployed. “The orphanage was located in a narrow alley in a densely populated area,” he said.
South Sumatra Social Agency handed out aid to the victims, including staple foods, child and baby needs, Muslim clothes and kitchen utensils.
