Man killed in godown fire
Updated: 2014-08-13-19:26
One person has been killed in a fire at chemical godowns at Chawkbazar in Old Dhaka.
The dead was identified as Abdul Malek, 65, caretaker of ‘Global Enterprise’ after fighters found a body in the gutted building.
Brajen Sarker of the Fire Service control room said, “The godown caught fire around 9:15pm Tuesday night. Eleven fire-fighting units had fought the blaze for 10 hours before it was doused.”
Five fire fighters were injured and given first aid, he said.
Chawkbazar Police Station OC Azizul Haque said the fire had spread to the nearby godowns of the Padma Enterprise, Habib & Sons, Selim Enterprise, Global Enterprise, and Bismillah Enterprise.
The Global Enterprise caretaker had gone missing soon after the fire began. Fire fighters later found his charred body.
“The body was badly burnt. One could hardly identity it. Prima facie, it seems it is Malek,” the OC said.
He said body samples had been collected for DNA verification of identity.
Brajen Sarker also said, “The godowns were full of inflammable substances. Reason of the fire and the extent of the damage are yet to be ascertained.”
