Residents helped put out a fire with water from their own homes in Pyinmana last week when fire engines called to a blaze found they had no water. The fire, which broke out at a toy shop opposite Pyinmana’s Myoma Market on Bo La Kyaw Road on September 3, damaged seven shops.
The fire was caused by candles burning before a shrine in the toy shop.
As the blaze spread in the early hours of the morning, about 30 fire engines from the surrounding townships of Dekkhinathiri, Ottarathiri, Zabuthiri, Lewe and Pyinmana converged on the scene, said U Aung Thu of Pyinmana township’s fire department.
The toy shop, a general store, a cool drinks shop, two gold shops and two mobile shops were damaged by fire, with losses estimated at K12.5 million(128,708$:1MMK=0.001030USD,
14/09/08 rate). None of the other shops were inhabited.
Residents called the fire brigade when they spotted the blaze, at first receiving no answer. “Two fire engines arrived after we informed No 2 fire station in Myo Oo ward, but without water. By then, the toy shop was almost entirely burned and the fire had spread other shops. About 10 people including me put out the fire with household water,” said Ko Thu, a resident.
The owner of the toy shop has been charged in connection with the fire, according to Pyinmana police.
Pyinmana has had two large fires and five smaller fires this year.
