One fisherman was missing while four others were rescued after their motorized banca caught fire off Palawan province Saturday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Sunday.
In its 6 a.m. report, the NDRRMC said the incident involving the banca “Mikaela Lu” occurred shortly after 10 a.m. off Fondeado Island in Puerto Princesa City.
“While at the vicinity of Fondeado Island, Puerto Princesa City, the engine carburetor of the said banca suddenly caught on fire for unknown reason, causing the five fishermen to abandon (it) and (jump) overboard,” it said.
A small boat passing through the area noticed the incident and rescued the five, bringing them to Pandan Island in Palawan for temporary shelter.
Still missing was Ronel Malinao, 34. The NDRRMC identified the five rescued fishermen as:
– Randy Balambang, 37
– Joel Escoto, 33
– Titing Gareales, 36
– Tito Alarcon, 39
Investigation showed the boat, owned by Roberto Alarcon, departed from Mandaragat village in Puerto Princesa City at 10 a.m.
The boat was en route to Honda Bay at the time of the incident.
The Palawan Coast Guard has directed nearby detachments to advise ships and sea craft in the area to be on the lookout for Malinao. — LBG, GMA News
