Fire gutted hundreds semi-permanent houses in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta, on Sunday evening, leaving about 500 people, who are mostly scavengers, homeless.
The blaze started around 8:30 p.m. and quickly razed the densely-populated area. An hour later, the South Jakarta Fire Agency deployed 36 fire trucks to the scene that finally extinguished the flames on Monday morning, kompas.com reported.
The Jakarta Disaster Response Agency (Tagana) and the Indonesian Red Cross have established tents and a public kitchen for the fire victims.
“The South Jakarta Social Agency has provided blankets, mats and mineral water for those affected by the fire,” said Fathul Bahri from Tagana. (yps)
