Updated: 2014-10-02-21:50

More than half of the city along with over 200 villages plunged into darkness on Wednesday after a 132 KV line from parent feeder of Dohna substation caught fire caused by over loading. It triggered a complete shut down in the are affecting 11 sub stations connecting to the parent line which supply power to various localities in city as well as villages.

Erratic power supply in the region continues to plague locals. But on Wednesday, the situation went from bad to worse after a 5 MVA transformer tripped, followed by a 40 MVA transformer burning down due to overloading in Dohna parent substation affecting power supply in connecting lines, including Kuharapeer, Rajendra Nagar and Deen Dayal Puram.

According to reports, the situation went out of control after a 5-MVA transformer which supplies power to the industrial area caught fire due to overloading. As the transformer’s oil leaked, the fire spread to nearby areas. In addition a 40MVA transformer too caused damage to circuit cables leading to major technical snag resulting in a massive blackout in almost half of the city. The power supply was also affected in 200 villages of the district.

Several sub stations, including Rajendra Nagar Civil lines – 2, IVRI, Air force, Nawabganj, Rithora, Baheri, Bhojipura, Jafarpur, Devraniya, Riccha, Shergarh and others were shut down for several hours.

In another incident under Sirauli police station, unidentified miscreants broke into Sirauli sub station in the wee hours of Wednesday and robbed as many as 10 drums of transformer oil along with copper wires estimated to be in few lakhs.

As per reports, around a dozen armed miscreants broke into the Sirauli sub station on Wedensday night and allegedly broke down supply panels and transformers after the staff members were kept in captivity for hours.

As per the power department officials, unidentified miscreants damaged the sub station machinery after which they robbed 2000 liters of transformer oil along with 4 trolleys of copper plates and wires before escaping in the dark.

Talking to TOI, sub divisional officer (SDO) Aonla Vikram Gangwar said, “We are yet to calculate estimated loss to the power department. The incident was shocking and we would soon raise an appeal with department to provide armed guards to avoid such untoward incidents in future.”

Confirming the incident station officer, Sirauli police station, Siya Ram Verma said, “A case has been registered against unidentified miscreants under section 379 of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Investigation is still under process and soon miscreants will be identified and nabbed.”

Bringing no respite to the power department, Junior Engineers (JE’s) went on 100 hours of continuous fasting demanding revision of grade pay. So far they were attending complaints as per “work to rule” policy. On Thursday, 84 JEs sat on a hunger strike from 2 pm.

It may be mentioned that there are total 110 JE working for UPPCL department in four adjoining districts, including Bareilly, Pilibhit, Badaun and Shahjhanpur. Apart from them, another 250 JEs working in various departments like irrigation, PWD and others too will join them from October 7.
