Fire at SJI chapel put out in 10 minutes by SCDF

A fire broke out in the chapel at St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) on Wednesday morning, but no one was hurt.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call about the inciden at 11.56am and sent a fire engine, a Red Rhino, support vehicle and two fire bikes to the school on Malcolm Road. The fire was extinguished in 10 minutes with a water jet.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. The school’s spokesman said the fire started in a room in the chapel. Students and staff only returned to the school after the SCDF gave it the all-clear signal.
Secondary One student Japheth Yeo said that when the fire alarm rang, they thought it was a drill. “They evacuated us and told us about the fire at the chapel. They said it was not that serious.” The 13-year-old said they were allowed to return to class about 40 minutes after they were evacuated.
