Updated: 2012-11-20-13:12
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) — Seven squatter homes were destroyed in a fire at Kampung Sekma, Sentul last night, leaving 30 people homeless.
Gombak Selatan Fire and Rescue Department senior assistant superintendent Haikal Jimmy Ngali Abdullah said the department received a distress call at 11.07pm.
“We are still investigating the cause of the fire and total losses incurred,” he told reporters at the scene, adding the flames were put out within 30 minutes by firemen who arrived in six fire engines from the Gombak Selatan Fire Station, Sentul Fire Station, Titiwangsa Fire Station and Hang Tuah Fire Station.
One of the victims S.Yasotha, 34, said she was fast asleep when a loud explosion woke her up and saw the power supply cut off.
“I was alone because my taxi driver husband was out at work. I didn’t have time to salvage any belongings and I estimate losses at between RM20,000 to RM30,000 including jewellery, electrical items, clothing, furniture and more,” she said.
