Fire destroys 50 shanties in south Delhi
Updated: 2014-11-06-12:09

Several families were left homeless after a fire broke out at a slum in south Delhi’s Andrews Ganj area on Tuesday evening. Fire officials said almost 50 shanties were gutted.

The incident took place around 4.30pm at the Kasturba Nagar slum. It took 10 fire tenders over an hour to contain the blaze. Fire officials said garbage dumped at the entry to the colony made it difficult to rescue people. “A few cylinders exploded while we were rescuing the last few residents,” said a police officer.

Police said a leaking cylinder from one of the hutments may be responsible for the incident. They added that the fire spread quickly as most of the houses were made of wood and other flammable material. Though some people suffered minor burn injuries, no casualties were reported.

Around 250 people have been left homeless. An NGO and police helped residents salvage their belongings and tried to rehabilitate them. A team led by local councilor Madan Lal assured that basic amenities were made available. The slum is home to migrants from Bengal and Bihar who work as labourers or in nearby residential colonies.
