Updated: 2012-06-11-12:00

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – At least 19 people sustained injuries when a vessel caught fire, triggering an explosion, while anchored on an island off Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi Saturday, authorities said.

Six of the victims suffered third-degree burns in the fire that struck M/L Nursiba at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the island barangay of Sipangkot while the vessel was loading gasoline to be transported to Sulu.

The six were identified as Berhamin Sarri, Aldinas Lajid, Salul Suhod, Madjilal Sidal, Hadjirul Maldisan, and Asali Almahud, all crewmen of the M/L Nursiba. They were rushed to the Zamboanga City Medical Center.

Abubakar Unnoh, Tawi-Tawi director of the Maritime Industry Authority, said a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank exploded, causing the fire that quickly engulfed the vessel.
