RANKEBAZAAR: At least four houses turned into ashes after a massive fire broke out at Chilingden VDC-7 in Panchthar today morning. Three other houses were affected while bringing the fire under control.
The blaze spread from a house belonging to Bishnu Mukhiya, a local, due to electric short circuit. DSP Dipak Kharel, of district police office, said that the houses of Chandra Gurung, Netra Lamichhane, Mani Kumar Chemjong and Rajendra Gautam were completely destroyed. Kharel informed that the houses belonging to Deuman Tamang, Rajendra Tamang and Mukti Acharya were partially affected.
Nepal Police, Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, locals and the fire department of Ilam jointly doused the blaze after five hours.
According to a rescue team, it was an arduous task bringing the fire under control due to thick walls and sturdy wooden joists.
Chief District Officer Pradip Raj Kandel said the area was on a high alert to prevent further damage. “Dozens of people who ran shops and hotels in the houses were displaced. However, no human causality was reported,” he said. Kandel added that as many as 150 people from 18 families were displaced in addition to property loss worth around five crore rupees. Transport services were also obstructed for four hours due to the fire.
Meanwhile, Disaster Rescue Committee, Ilam and Panchthar, contributed Rs 120,000 while District Development Committee, Panchthar donated Rs 150,000 for the relief of victims.
