Coal Mine Explosion: Latest Tally Of Workers Killed, Injured

KUCHING, Nov 23 (Bernama) — Three coal mine workers were killed and 30 others injured in yesterday’s coal mine explosion at Selantik in Pantu, Sri Aman.
The deceased comprised North Korean Pang Chung Hyok, 29; Myanmar Tun Tun Win, 36; and, Indonesian, Kardianto, 38.
These figures were released by Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Nor Hisham Mohamad at a press conference here this evening.
He said those injured were eight North Koreans; Myanmars (six); Indonesians (eight); China (six) and Bangladeshis (two).
Of the number, 20 are in critical condition and suffered maximum burns. They are treated at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) intensive care unit; Normah Medical Specialist Hospital and, Borneo Medical Centre here.
The rest who were out of danger have been warded at the SGH and Sri Aman Hospital.
Nor Hisham said another victim had been transferred from Sri Aman Hospital to SGH this afternoon, while two victims were transferred from the Borneo Medical Centre to the Sibu General Hospital.
Tomorrow, another three will be transferred from SGH to Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.
According to Nor Hisham, the 33 coal mine workers had rushed out of the tunnels, soon after the explosion but three of them died due to excessive inhalation of smoke.
