Updated: 2014-11-24-11:59
A fire that destroyed a house on Sunday night also incinerated the corpse of the owner’s dead wife, who was due to be cremated in January.
The blaze destroyed a two-storey house in tambon Bueng Sanun of Thanyaburi district where six people were resting. All of them escaped, but over a million baht in cash and a large amount of gold were burned in the fire, along with the late wife’s body, according to Pol Maj Phumret Inkong of Thanyaburi station.
Ket Boonsri, 66, the house’s owner, said he runs a business from his home selling diesel and gasoline to shops in the district.
He said the power went off on Sunday night and then a fire broke out on the second floor.
Mr Ket, his daughter and grandchildren were staying downstairs at the time and fled for their lives. His son Kamphol Boonsri was on the second floor and had to jump down, and hurt his leg.
The man said his wife died over a year ago and he had kept her body in the house and scheduled the cremation for Jan 11, 2015. Her body was burned in the fire.
Mr Ket said he had about 1.4 million baht in cash in the house, along with over 100-baht weight of gold jewellery, on the second floor. All were burned in the fire. Police banned people from entering the area to protect him from theft of what was left of his valuables.
About 10 fire trucks and fire fighters took around 45 minutes to control the fire. A pickup truck and a car were also damaged by the flames.
Investigators suspected the fire was started by an electrical short circuit, but a full examination had still to be made to determine the cause.
