3-year-old dead in Thane home fire, mom critical

THANE: A 3-year-old boy, Jeeshan Ali Kadri, died in a fire that broke out in a flat at Amrut Nagar in Thane on Saturday morning.
The victim’s younger brother, Usmaan (2), and mother, Gultaj (28), were injured in the blaze, which the police suspect may have been caused by a leak from a gas cylinder.
Gultaj and Usmaan are undergoing treatment at a facility in Navi Mumbai.
The victim’s father, Shahdab Ali Kadri, works in a chemist’s shop and was at his workplace when the fire broke out. According to the Mumbra police, the fire was reported around 10am by a neighbour, who called up the fire brigade. “It was around 10am when my grandson, Shoeb, noticed flames emanating from the house. With the help of other neighbours, he immediately broke open the door and took Jeeshan and others to a hospital,” said Abdul Sattar, a neighbour. The victim’s condition was critical when he was brought to the hospital and declared dead later. Gultaj and Usman were shifted to National Burns Centre in Airoli.
“When we entered we found that the blaze had gutted the entire house. A spark from a switchboard or a matchstick may have caused the fire after gas leaked from the cylinder,” said a senior officer from Mumbra police station.
Corporator Rauf Lala also visited the house. “Fire engines could not reach the spot for nearly an hour since shopkeepers had blocked the building’s entrance,” claimed Lala. “Gultaj is in a critical condition since she has suffered over 75% burns. However, Usman’s condition is stable,” said a doctor.
A case of accidental death has been registered.
